Any motorist looking at the headline will probably say, what does anyone want to improve about parking? We’ve been doing it the same way for decades and it’s worked pretty well for us, so what’s the point? But then someone usually comes along who changes the years of practice just a little bit, and suddenly it’s clear that something was wrong all along.
History is full of simple methods that have radically changed the way we do things. Perhaps the following method of parking cars could be one such innovation.
The same is the case with the trick that is currently circulating on social media and has become a viral hit with more than 5 million views and enthusiastic comments.
Parking beautifully by line
This particular video was taken in the parking lot of the American company General Motors and caused a real uproar. The author of the video went to the site to pick up a new car when he was intrigued by the way it was parked. All the cars were aligned along the line separating the rectangles. The simple regularity of the parking system amazed the customer, as there was plenty of space on either side of each car.
The parking lot is so beautifully sleek and the spots themselves look like they’re at least double the size. “What if I told you we’ve all been parking all wrong so far?” is the main message of this video on the social network TikTok. So the stunned driver urged everyone to exercise the same discipline that prevailed in this parking lot. The enthusiastic response, additional shares and more than 5 million views of the original clip suggest that the message has found an audience.
If everyone did it that way
“Imagine it like this in front of Wallmart,” adds the video’s author, “there would be fewer scratches and everyone could get on and off the bus quite comfortably. It’s just that we’ve been doing it wrong all along,” he concludes. There were, of course, critical voices. These users saw mass access change as a utopia. “Do you think people will park exactly on the line if they have trouble hitting it at all?” was one response to the video.

The truth is that if people parked in a uniform way, it would make no difference in principle how they did it. It is the disparity in the use of the designated space that is the stumbling block. That’s how unequal distances are born, plus the cars are different sizes. A lot of drivers would undoubtedly be in favour of applying this. But there will always be a group that will do it their own way. Whether by force or just out of habit and laziness, the result is the same.
