Architecture is a demanding but very creative field. If one has the talent, one can see amazing things even in a place where others see only dust and dirt. The story of Laura, a young architect who saw potential even in an abandoned public toilet building, proves it.
Few people see the potential in abandoned public toilets. A London building that has undergone extensive renovation proves that this is realistic. Architecture is a demanding but very creative field. If one has the talent, one can see amazing things even in a place where others see only dust and dirt. The story of Laura, a young architect who saw potential even in an abandoned public toilet building, proves it. Even though her family and friends discouraged her idea, she stood her ground and built an amazing recreational place.
The place nobody wanted
Long unmaintained toilets located near Crystal Palace Parade in London. At just 55 square metres in size, few would look for anything other than public toilets. However, Laura was captivated by the place in no time at all and didn’t see here what others see. Instead of the dilapidated and ruined toilets, she immediately imagined what the rooms could look like with a little care and creativity.
She came across the place shortly after graduating from art school in Glasgow. At the time she was full of ideals and creative ideas, so she was looking for a place where she could bring them to life. And an abandoned public toilet seemed to be the perfect solution for her plan. As she wanted to break through as an architect in London, she decided that her first change had to be radical and fundamental enough to take others’ breath away.
The fight with the authorities was difficult, but in the end she won
Of course, the first problem she had to deal with was getting permission for this change. When she first voiced her plan out loud, many people didn’t believe her, and she admits that she was sometimes met with sneers.
But she did not give up her plan, because she was well aware that the only way she could become known was through such a controversial transformation. In the end, she won the tug-of-war with the authorities and was able to go ahead with the transformation.
She bought the building from the city and without further ado she set about remodeling it. For a price of around 88 500 USD, she managed to turn the horrible and dilapidated place into a modern apartment. It is not only cosy, but also very spacious and even full of light. Compared to what the rooms looked like when she bought the property, it’s almost unbelievable what she’s managed to turn it into. And that’s exactly what she needed for her career.
