Every dog is man’s best friend, but not every canine friend is equally studious, intelligent and hard-working. There are some breeds that just love to lounge on the couch, eat treats, and if you want to teach them to “give paw”, it’s usually a lifetime job.
In contrast, there are dogs that love training, games, new tricks and their cleverness often surprises even their owners. Which breeds are the most intelligent?
Border collie
You probably all know this dog – agile, smart and very friendly dog is becoming more and more popular. Originally a herding dog, it is now used for many helping activities due to its intelligence, but you can also train it for various other activities such as dancing or agility.
Beware though, collies are very active and hate boredom and loneliness. This dog requires a lot of attention and time and is not suitable for those who spend all day at work.
Poodle
This dog used to be quite popular, but nowadays you don’t see it on the street so often. But it is still one of the smartest breeds ever. It’s coat is hypoallergenic, so it’s good for small children or people who are not comfortable with other animals. Since they are smaller, they can handle being in an apartment, but you still need to give them enough time and think of activities for them so they don’t get bored.
German Shepherd Dog
When you say police dog, everyone probably thinks of this breed. Maybe it is because of the TV series Commissioner Rex, where the German Shepherd played the title role, but the truth is that these dogs are very obedient, disciplined and combine strength, hard work and great intelligence. Shepherds need to be trained well, so they are not suitable for inexperienced owners.
Golden Retriever
They are perhaps one of the most popular family breeds. It is distinguished by its peacefulness, so it is a great companion for children. Often this dog will even like what another breed would not like. It is also used as an assistance dog, precisely because of its friendly nature, patience and cleverness, with which it easily learns the necessary commands.
Doberman
This dog does not have the best reputation, perhaps because of its appearance, which gives the impression of a vigilant dog that is not afraid of anything. It’s true that Dobermans work well as guard dogs that won’t let anyone pass uninvited, but it’s not that they’re naturally aggressive. It’s all about training, and you can easily train a Doberman to be a great playmate for children.
